Increasingly we hear discussions about 'Empty Calories'. You can be forgiven for wonder what exactly they are talking about. So let us break it down here:

What is a Calorie?
A calorie is a unit of measurement — but it doesn't measure weight or length. A calorie is a unit of energy. When you hear something contains 100 calories, it's a way of describing how much energy your body could get from eating or drinking it.

Different foods have different calories. For example:

  • 100g banana = 89 calories
  • 100g chocolate = 546 calories (standard milk chocolate, brands may vary)
  • 100g carrots = 41 calories

What are “empty calories”?
Empty calories are a massive contributor to a nation of people that are increasingly over-fed and under-nourished. 

Food that offers empty calories means that it is food that is giving you a calorie intake but offers you no nutritional benefit in return. Highly processed foods that are generally high in sugar are the most common foods offering ‘empty calories’.

What is the problem with "empty calories'?
The real problem occurs because when you are filling up on foods that provide only "empty calories" which means you are not eating the more nutritious foods, that your body needs to be healthy and run smoothly. 

How can we stop filling up on “empty calories”?
